not to be ungrateful...
hmm.... it doesn't work:
Code:
[theCoder@len ~/dev]$ ./PublicLogin.exe
bash: ./PublicLogin.exe: cannot execute binary file
That's unfortunate. :(
Maybe the readme file included in the download will help. From the readme:
IIII. Reason of Binaries Only
=============================
Verant has encryptions that they have for your safety so people cannot steal your account by sniffing through packets, for the
continued safety of this, the source is not released. We hope that you agree that it is too much of risk to release the source
possibly to people with bad intentions. I hope this login server will ease you a bit if you have had issues with people logging
on to your server when you did not want them.
As someone who has studied computer security, I can tell you that the security through obscurity that you're advocating is only a temporary security. I don't know how many other people have broken the scheme that Verant uses, but I can imagine that you're not the only ones. Fortunately, you at least have good intentions and are not interested in stealing Verant's customers' accounts. However, if you have discovered a flaw in how Verant verifies a user, the correct course of action is to inform Verant, not try to cover it up. If that does not yield any results, perhaps a post to someplace like BugTraq would be appropriate. It is better to fix the flaw than to pretend it doesn't exist.
But perhaps point 4 is really because of point 1:
I. Limitations of Login Server
=============================
You can only have up to twelve (12) login accounts, any over that it will give a message saying the account is banished.
You can only have one (1) world server connected to the login server, if you attempt to connect another, it will be kicked (ghosted).
What really is the point of these limitations? To prevent people from operating competing communities? The only rational reason I can see for keeping the login server proprietary is because you want to sell access to the EQEmu login server the same way Verant does. I guess that's your prerogative to do so, but IMHO you should be upfront about it.
Now, I'm probably not going to make any friends with this post. I may even get banned (though I hope not). I don't mean to be ungrateful for the work being put into this project, but it's really all for naught without a working login server. So I encourage the maintainers to make sure they know what they're doing. Sure, the login server at eqemu.net works for now, but how long will it be there? Imagine if bnetd had a similar Achilles heal.

Absolutely Marvelous!
Excellent work!
And thanks for updating the README.TXT for the PublicLogin!
I could never get it to work before, this time through it worked like a charm!
You guys are hung like ogres! -and-
You ladies are small as wood elves!
Thanks,
Mike
ps. I've no clue what the guy above me is talking about. Works fine for me....and I am one of those morons that patched, so I can't play but I did get the login server up and running and can see my server and select it....just crashes when I hit enter(damn my patch-happy mouse!).

Originally, only the mini-login was available, which was just a joke. I volunteered to make a public login, the restrictions were asked by multiple devs, the major reason that there isn't a full functional login server is because of its complexity. Second, no public source because the original code is not ours, it was given to us and is not under the open source agreement. As for a linux version, il look into it this weekend...

We're not going to charge for it lol.. one big reason is to keep people coming back and not going off on their own.
I know that may seem selfish but think about it. if it became widespread and everyone started using it then verant will be forced to take action againts us (or the packet code). the same goes for ShowEQ if it was a Win32 app (because right now the only thing holding back the 500,000 subscribers using ShowEQ is the fact they dont know linux or vmware).

Many thanks image. A windows version does me no good and I'm sure a few others here are the same way.

theCoder had a good point, but you guys came back with a better point. It's not to the advantage of the project to have SOE worry about 1000's of users quitting because there are other servers that can support just as much as they can, and then some. Maybe after you guys get all the bugs worked out, and 1.0 is released, you can release something more epic than 12 users, and maybe my that point, a patch server then noone has to worry about SOE changing code, well, except your lawyers that is :p
Keep up the good work, guys, and hope we get that new patch out so i can reinstall my server database for the 51st time

That's probably whats going to happen once the emu is complete and playable just like a real EQ server (normal leveling rules, quest database, better/complete items DB, mob loot DB, ect)

Shawn: My server is Linux-based. I want to keep the server and client seperate. Sure, I could run the login on the Win98 box...but that defeats the separation. I tried wine with no luck. However, if it means a risk to the dev team and the emulator, then I will do without.

Login Binaries Download
We don't need to download these binaries if we only play on other peoples servers right?
