I have noticed . on some servers

When i am in Unrest .. and have about 10 mobs on me ..

i get really bad lag .. then crash character select .. and can log right back in with really bad lag ..

but if i #zone halas .. ( no one there normally ) really quick ..

I keep my connection and the lag drops .. back to normal

That would depend on memory, CPU speed, clients connecting, bandwidth, size of zone, and number of spawns, windows or linux, other apps ect. running on that machine...

There are lots of variables. And I don't have anything but rough guesses to offer you... a 1GHz with 1GB of ram running linux, and only the zone servers could run up to 15-20 fully spawned zones with 20 clients each well enough. Running mysql and world may drop that down to 8-16 On a windows machine I would say 5-10 zones.

If your running windows, the entire server, and EQ on the same machine, 2-4 zones.

What are you planning fo your server? 10-20 friends playing together, or 100-200 people logging in...

Spliting the server load will help of course. But if you don't have the bandwith to support more than 30 clients, then there isn't much sense in taking up more machines to run your server... The setup is directed by how you plan to use it, but limited by your resources.

Also if your connection is through a firewall, that will complicate your networking setup. More so if you split the server to 2 or more machines.
