Default new to servers

I recently started EQEmu and was curious if it would be difficult to create a server just for me and a friend to play on (2 separate computers) with just using the basic EQ world, no customizing or anything. Would this be hard to do or would it also involve Perl and other programming?

If you can follow a guide, its not too difficult. This all depents on how computer savvy you are imo and the question is not answerable from my point of view.
If you want your own server for internal uses ( IE: personal home computers, no internet involved but local LAN ) I would suggest a minilogin server as compared to a public server. This is what I run at home. Initial setup was a headache as I had to become familiar with programs I have never used before. In retrospect I laugh at how easy it is for me to understand the set up now.

Pearl, mysql...these are needed and just things you need to dive in an get accustomed too. You will/should spend a lot of time searching these forums for the answers to questions you come accross. I'm sure at some point, someone else has experienced them as well.

The link below should take you to multiple choices for server install.

i've been following the guide, but i have come across a snag i can't fix. after i installed mySQL, it asked me for the server settings and everything, then when i click 'execute' everything goes through but i get an error saying to make sure my firewall isnt blocking port 3306. I have made sure that incomming AND outgoing on this port is allowed, and i have also tried running this with my firewall turned off. can you help me?

Try turning your firewall to "DMZ"
I would never recommend this for a PC that has internet access ( The ones I use for EqEmu have not had internet since initial set up, just the local LAN )

Perhaps others could provide some insight. Firewalls are not really my area as it varies depending on what you are using for your firewall.

Again it depends on your router, every type of router has thier own setup options and differs from others. I would find a faq quide for your specific brand of router to find the answer.

As far as your router goes, you dont need to worry about DMZ and port fowarding at your point. Your at the Server Instance Configuration Wizard are you not. That stuff is taken care of localy, not accross the LAN or WAN. If your using windows, go under your control panel to Windows Firewall

In there you need to make sure that one of the programs that is a exception(meaning it has full privilages) is going to be MYSQL. This error has never happend to me just using Windows Firewall so I would assume you may have a 3rd party Firewall on there such as Norton, AVG, McAfee, ect..... These programs have things that will block progams from running even locally if you did not approve them first. If you do have said 3rd party stuff, try disabling the firewall all together and then re run the installation for MYSQL. Uninstall it, and delete everthing in the C:\Program Files\Mysql\ folder and then do your reinstall.
