Default eqemu - the concept

The idea of beening able to stick it to Sony and still be able to play EQ on our own terms, on our own servers, with no downtime if we choose, make custom content, to play the game the way WE want to play it is an idea for the record books. many people myself included, play mmo's to defile, or break the set boundaries, to cheat the games that are crowned as uncheatable. now sure one could just set the GM lvl for all new players to 250, and instant gratification is granted. but that is to people who enjoy cheating is to people enjoy lvling. people, the tools to hack your servers has been at your login screens for along time now, most know it most have taken steps not to allow most of it in current forms.. for a few to make the choice for all that it will not be allowed on any server, defeats the idea of eqemu.

isn't the idea about the freedom to choose what you want to do with your server?

theres always going to be asshats that will try to destroy the server to the point that its unplayable by anyone. i'snt that the risk of that server admin?

i also understand that there is really no sure fly way to stop the use of third party tools on servers that don't want them used. but if you give people the choice saying please don't use 3rd party hacking tools here if your caught you will be banned, or please come on in and hack till your hearts content, the common sense of people would tell them to use the later. again there will always be asshats, its also not so hard to type an ip addy in to a ban list.

This seems like a very random grouping of topics for a post.

That said, you have some interesting points. I for one was hacking EQ without 3rd party programs since very early on. My friend and I always played gnomes and we called it "gnoming" when we would exploit in one way or another, often discovered on our own.

Examples included:
1. Widespread use of camp/comeback bug that would let you go through walls.
2. Charming caster NPCs then breaking charm as they are in the process of nuking another NPC in a zone with separate factions. This sparked wars of NPCs of which you got all the exp for if you were on the aggro list.
3. Glitching NPCs onto geometry that made them unable to do anything, and killing them.
4. Summoning thousands of cleric hammers to kill elemental gods.
5. And the list goes on...

And don't forget the fun things like intentionally getting epic pets charmed by npcs, several times. It always surprises the guy who pulls Tserrina in TOFS . Or how about glitching rogue pets on top of respawn points in newbie zones? Fire was my favorite. Soandso spawns, is hit by ice comet.

You can detect when someone uses MQ to warp, etc. It is much harder to catch a creative gnome .

That said, I think the best thing to do is not give huge threats about what you will do to someone if you find them cheating. That simply eggs them on and invites a challenge. If you find someone cheating on your server, just delete their toons and ban them and don't say anything about it.
