The Problem:
I was getting frustrated myself with this error. I would get to the server select screen, select my server and then it would boot me back to the server select screen and give me a 1017 error, try running the patch, etc. Sound familiar?
The Cure:
I finally decided to uninstall everything and start from scratch. We're talking EQ, the patcher, the database(s), FQAdmin, Maps, MySQL....everything.
As I reinstalled each thing I checked to make sure everything was working properly. After installing FQAdmin Maps into the EQ directory under the "Maps" folder, the 1017 error appeared. After I checked the directory, I noticed the Maps folder no longer had just the <shortzonename>.txt files but there were some different ones in there as well.
Without deleting the Maps folder, I selected all files within the folder and deleted them. Then I ran the EQLive patcher to put the proper .txt files back where they were suppose to be. I tested it with a login and it worked!!! I had cured my problem.
But now how can I view the maps using FQAdmin if I don't have the files installed in the Maps folder? Simple......Create a maps folder anywhere else BUT the EQ directory that you're using. Install the FQAdmin maps into that directory you've just created instead of the /everquest/maps folder. Then open FQAdmin and select the settings, point the maps directory to the newly created maps folder you unzipped the file to and "tada!" Everything works as it should.
Hope this helps a few of you out there. I can't guarantee it'll help all of you, I'm only stating what I did to fix my problem with the dreaded 1017 error. It seems to be spreading like SARS on the forums
*NOTE: If you are going to try this, you DO NOT have to uninstall everything. I only did that to find the source of the problem. Just start off by deleting the files in the Maps directory in your everquest folder if you've installed the FQAdmin maps files and go from there.
