Making your own item guide?? does it exist?

Is there a good guide or guides out there on editing items. I am specifically looks for a few things:
1. Adding custom stats (Duh)
2. A list of what each texture appears as
3. How to edit the database so a player begins with the item
4. Saving and getting the items working for all players
