Default new to EQEmu, with initial setup questions..

been playing EQ for about 4 years now, and quite familiar with the game and the files used to play.. being a bit computer saavy, hopefully getting involved into eqemu wont be too challenging..

from reading through the newbie forums and the basics, i've come to decide on a basic setup so i can play EQLive and EQEmu on the same machine without any conflicts, such as:

creating two directories:

d:\everquest (for EQLive)
d:\EQEmu\everquest (for EQEmu, obviously)

and creating 2 desktop icons, respectively named EQLive and EQEmu. thus preventing any EQLive patches from interfering with my EQEmu directory.

This seems like the most direct setup, and would like to know if anyone else has tried this and has any problems with it? As for editing the .ini files, i'll probably do that this evening. With just recently playing EQ and patching my system, i understand that i'll have to wait for dev to catch up with EQLive before jumping into the Emu world.

Will this setup have any negative affects on either version of EQ?

any suggestions and advice would be appreciated, thanks.

This is how i am set up, i just use EQW instead of shortcuts.

Works fine and is definetly the recomended way.

That will work fine, as long as you use the 'patchme' method or EQW to prevent patching your eqemu directory accidentally.

not exactly familiar with 'patchme' or the EQW method's.. any light?

EDIT EDIT--

on second thought, i'd imagine by using the .exe from the directory of either version of EQ, it would patch that version.

ie. if you run eqgame.exe in the d:\everquest (EQLive) directory, it wouldnt patch my EQEmu version..

is this correct?

Yup, but once EQemu catches up with live again, when you run your eqemu version of the EQ client you might not want to patch, in case it breaks the emu. From Merth's guide:

Open Windows Explorer

Navigate to your Everquest directory. Typically, this is c:\program files\everquest.

Locate the file eqgame.exe. This may take a while!

Using the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON, click and drag eqgame.exe from Windows Explorer to the desktop. This is what you should see:



In the menu that pops up after you complete the drag, select Create Shortcuts Here

A new icon has now been created on your desktop.

Right click on the newly created icon and select "Properties" on the menu.

In the Properties window that pops up, find the Target field on the Shortcut tab.

At the end of the text in this field, add a space with the space bar and then type in the word patchme
Or you can get EQW from here http://www.eqwindows.com/

It allows you to play EQ in a window (developed before Sony added that feature), but also has a checkbox so you can select whether you want to patch or not.

good deal.. thanks for the 'patchme' and EQW info..

currently i have to alt + enter to get EQLive into window mode, and then shift + alt + r to get a hold of the mouse within my OS.. then and only can i navigate to my second instance of EQ (my ghetto method of 2 boxin), or browse through my PC.. i'll experiment with EQW when i get home or have time to actually do so, but in foresight, does EQW allow you to play in full screen and eliminate all the extra keystrokes involved in switching between characters? also, i've noticed when playing EQLive in window mode, it isnt as clear and plush as full screen, which makes me jump into full screen..

also, regarding the 'patchme' info.. the way merth described using this on the target line for the .exe for EQEmu, he edited the .ini file to point EQ to the EQEmu version, but left everything in the c:\program files\everquest directory.. ie. not making or using the backup directory..

it's fair to assume that the 'patchme' mod is for the EQEmu version, and should NOT be used on the EQLive version.. right? so my question is, does initially connecting to the EQEmu servers patch my d:\EQEmu\everquest directory, without having to apply the 'patchme' on the target line? or is that why the 'patchme' mod is implemented for?

sorry if this is coming out a bit confusing, just trying to get a complete grip on the concept.. thanks again, fellas..

Using "patchme" stops EQ from updating. dont use it for your live copy. EQW is pure window mode, you can set your own hotkeys to have controle of your mouse or to switch between running EQW windows.

Yes, 'patchme' should be used with EQemu only, for your EQlive directory you will always want to patch to live.

When you change the eqhost.txt file in your EQemu directory to point to the EQemu servers, it will still connect to Sony and download whatever patches you are missing, including overwriting your eqhost.txt to point you back to the Sony world servers, unless you use patchme or EQW.

Always use the patchme method for your EQemu directory, UNLESS you read here that it is OK to install the patch. If you do patch your emu directory, then you will need to quit out once the patch is done and re-edit your eqhost.txt to point back to the emu servers.

good news guys.. created my backup directory, just for EQEmu, and made the mod's to my eqhost.txt and datarate.txt files.. along with the 'patchme' fix as well, and it works beautifully.. just hoping that the EQEmu god's of code are able to work out a fix for the latest code break.. :P

i mainly do network/desktop support with a little bit of server work for a company here in washington, dc.. but i'll have to bow to you programmers and scripters.. honestly, i dont know how yall do that shyte.. lol

I've edited the eqhost.txt to the domain and ports suggested in the guide. It won't work. Yet I check this site and it says servers are up and people are online. I am new as of today =P. Anyone know what's up? I get to the login and it says to check my eqhost.txt file, as if it doesn't exist. I am very computer "savy". I feel like an idiot. Thx for any flames in advance.
