Sometimes "can" and "should" are very different. X-boxen are designed for graphics and game optimization - essentially, they are clients. You wouldn't want to run a server off them.

Umm x-box runs windows 2k, not linux. It states that right in the manual. You can install linux on an x-box, but then you lose the ability to game on it. Rather large waste of cash imho.

Where else could you buy a New PC with the same stats as an X-box for that price? Oh right nowhere.

Wrong. It is a PC. It has pertty much exacly the same components as the PC you're sitting in front of now. And yes you can out Linux on it without Mod'ing it at all. Have a look around (google) and you'll find what ya need.

You're joking right Arkaria? I could hit 2 stores within 6 blocks and grab a comp with similar stats for the same price if not cheaper. Used mind you, but similar stats.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a fully functional machine with hard drive, memory, OS, and a GeForce 3 or 4 (can't remember which) for less than 179$ US.
Microsoft has been taking a loss on the price of them since they started making them to try and hone in on PS/2's niche...
Even if the stats of the machine itself compared to a PC arent impressive, the price of it is...

Yup yup. Sony sells their machines at a loss, too. It is SOP (standard operating procedure). They count on selling/licensing the games to make money.

news.com[/url]]Sony learned the pitfalls of convergence three years ago, when it launched PlayStation 2, which plays DVDs as well as games. PS2 promptly became the cheapest DVD player in Japan, bought by many consumers who used it mostly as a movie player.
"Sony lost of a lot of money on those initial customers, because they didn't buy many games," IDC's Olhava said. "If you give people reasons to buy a console besides games, that starts to destroy the whole business model."

The chip on the xbox is an MX chip, TONS of boards out there that have em onboard and in actuality they don't perform any better than a GeF2. Take into consideration the xbox also only has 64MB of shared memory, so the CPU and graphics chip use the same memory. CPU is a mod'd P3, P3's are cheap as dirt. 8gb HD is also cheap as dirt. I can run out today and pick all that up or find a similar system in a local newspaper for the same price, or less, than an xbox and not have to piss around with mod chip and xbox linux install.
But the point was the EMU server would run on an xbox. Doubt it would be worth bothering with with a piddly 64mb of memory when most server ops are running 1+ GB of mem.

XBOX can run these Operating Systems because it has a HDD.. So you can actually install Linux or Windows to a HDD and shove it in your XBOX and then you've got Linux or Windows on your XBOX. Also I found out a nice way of keeping games you hire out.. Basically like copying them. I made a program so you can save games to your HDD, I put an 80gig HDD in and now all you do is use the program to write the game to the HDD, and everytime it starts up it gives you "My Game List" or "Cancel" to play a game on disk or using HDD.
