Default EQEmu questions, I'm a little niave, sorry

Ok, I am very new to this EQEmu business. My questions are (if someone has the moment to answer them), from what I have read so far, you can run EQ by yourself by creating a closed server. How does this work with your current characters? Is there any changes or harm done to any files neccessary for the live Everquest? Does it function just like normal EQ except you control it? Is there a way for Verant to know you are using this Emu, and if so, is it legal? Just curious really.

Thank you for your time...

1) Your current characters arent affected. They live on Verants servers, the only way you'd get them is if you recreate them yourself.

2) No files were harmed in this making of this emulator.
Only a simple change is necessary to play on an emulated server, the eqhost.txt file. When you log into live, it will fix itself.. Note that currently live eq is broken in regards to the emulator, so you need a back of version that contains per 10/31 version of eqgame.exe and a couple of other files. Most of us smart ones keep 2 eq directories, one for playing EQ LIVE, one for playing EQEMU.

3) It functions like normal EQ for the most part, not everything works the same, this is being built from scratch remember. Alot of the functionality just isnt there yet.

4) Is there a way for Verant to detect it? Only if you run through East Commons screaming, 'God, this zone is soooo much more crowded than the EQEMU server I run at home!'

5) Is it legal? Well, it's not illegal... Im sure Verant doesnt like it though.

Ok, I am starting to grasp this slowly. I am not always that quick on the uptake. The reason I want an EQEmulator is play explore Everquest to it's fullest when it finally dies out because of EQ2 and other games like it.

I have been reading the readme over and over and going through several posts here, again, slowly grasping it. SO, running minlogin and following the steps in one of the stickies allows me to run pretty much the entire world of EQ (Except PoP, I don't have that yet) create a character to my liking, summon items, spells, monsters, go anywhere and do anything I pretty much want? What can't I do? Are any of these I listed untrue?...

get to a command prompt (i.e. Start, Run, cmd or command for win9x, ENTER) navigate to where your EQEmu files are located, and type everything inside these brackets [world.exe adduser eqemu eqemu 200] press enter then try logging in.

Read the directions very carefully, then read them again. read all the stickys in the win32 support section (Twice!). You really will have to do some of the work yourself.

edit: If you updated your EQ Client to the latest version, you are screwed till next emu release. Do not update using EverQuest.exe unless you KNOW there is a current Emu that works with it.

Well, I am able to get to the server select screen using eqemu username and password or my publin username password, but I just continue to get the 1017 need to run patch error. I have been fishng through the posts and haven't found anything that has worked yet. *including running both world.exe commands from run*.

I am itchin' to get on my own server and mess around with EqAmind, any have any solutions? I run on MSN DSL640K, Windows ME, Norton and firewalls disabled. What am I doing wrong here...?

I just don't get it. I am no longer getting any errors in the Minilogin, World, or Boot5zones windows. Just that dum 1017 error. Everything else is working just fine. Hmmmm...what version is 3.11EqEmu compatable with? I mean as far as Eqlive patch? Perhaps I have to wait a newer version of EqEmu...

Look above, Trumpcard pointed it out.

EQEmu 3.11 runs with the eq live patch from 10/31, but not past then.
