At one stage I did use EQemu for a while. My HDD crashed and I had to re-partition it and as a result I lost everything I had done.
In my experience I never had to use a dos box to get the emu working.
I made a copy of my EQ directory, named that "Emulated Everquest" and placed the emu in a folder named "Emulator" <-- gee wasnt that original, and setup everything to run from there. This is over a LAN btw.
The shortcut I used was the one made from eqgame.exe (I think) with patchme stuck on the end of the target area. I noticed now that sometimes you have to use eqw in order for it to work, but the patchme thing worked for me before my HDD crashed.
A friend of mine has to use the eqw way otherwise he got Error 1017 after selecting a character.
Now that I have reinstalled I get bumped back to char select after logging into a character ;(
I have to admit, when I was using it I was very happy with it. At the time, I was disappointed in the damage calculations (What, hitting for 700's, dream on ;P) and some of the spells. But it was fun whacking friends around and then towering over them with #size.
