just change your eqhost.txt file that is located in your everquest folder to look like this...

[LoginServer]
Host=eqemulator.net:5998

Fire up eq without patching it and you'll see a nice list of servers.

Like Mattmeck says, it's all in the Wiki. You just have to take the time to read, read and read...
