Blank screen launches after server select

So I'm having a problem getting into the game and I've tried just about everything in the FAQ. I installed the Underfoot download from Steam and did all the regular "getting started" stuff. The login screen launches and I can get to the server select screen, but when I choose a server and EQ launches, it opens up in windowed mode and it's just an empty black screen. Tried messing with graphics properties, resolution, etc. and nothing makes any change. Could use some suggestions because i'd really like to play!
