Can you port from a Windows to Linux server?

I plan on setting up my first server very soon. I have spent several months reading on the forums here in advance of starting my project. I am curious if I can start running a server on a windows machine and later port over to a Linux box?

I am thinking you can, just not 100 percent positive. Thanks.
