Default I can't login, can anyone help

I heard about EQEmu a while ago, and the other day I decided to give it a try.

I went to the readme and followed the steps exactly: I installed EverQuest Trilogy on my comp, then replaced the eqhost.txt with what the readme told me to. I never patched to the Sony run EQ servers.

I then tried to run EverQuest with EQWindow. I would open up EQW and tell it to open up Everquest. I'm not sure what executable I tried, does it matter whether it was eqgame or everquest? Anyways, the License Agreement would pop in the window, I clicked on Agree. It would then revert to full-screen mode, go through the Station and VI screens, then go back to windowed mode and show a black screen that would not do anything. So I decided to try the patchme method.

I wasn't exactly sure how to do the patchme method. Well, my roommate is trying to get EQEmu to work too (to no avail) and went into the IRC chat to see if anyone could help. They told him to right-click on the EverQuest icon on Desktop, then under properties change "C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest Trilogy\Everquest.exe" to "C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest Trilogy\eqgame.exe" patchme (quotes and all). I then double-clicked on the icon and it started up and I got to the login screen for EQ. I'm assuming this is where you enter your forum name/password. Well, I entered the info and clicked Login, but it told me it couldn't connect to the server. It's been doing this everytime I've tried.

I'm thinking it might just be my network, since I can't log on to other game servers like DAoC or the Sony run EQ servers (stupid college network). I haven't had the opportunity to check on another connection yet. On the offhand chance something else was wrong I decided to download the EQEmu Patcher and mess around with that. I put it in my EverQuest Trilogy, installed and ran it. It downloaded a whole bunch of files, then said All files OK for EQEmu. So I thought, "OK, maybe I just needed to patch up to what EQEmu runs now," went back to Desktop and double-clicked the EverQuest icon (still changed to "...\eqgame.exe" patchme) and an Error Starting Program msg popped up: "The EQGAME.EXE is linked to missing export MSS32.DLL:_AIL_set_3D_speaker_type@8." After you click OK another error msg is under that one: "C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest Trilogy\eqgame.exe A device attached to the system is not functioning." I have no idea what in the world this file is.

So...I went back to the EQEmu Patcher and clicked the "Run EQ" under the Options on the left. It patches, then an error msg pops up: "Run-time error '53': File not found"

So obviously I have very little idea as to what the hell I'm actually doing  I know this is a lot of info for someone to trudge through, but I've read the guides, howtos, and stickies and can't seem to find the answer. I'm hoping it's just a network screw-up that won't allow me to connect to the login server. But if you read this and happen to see something that screams out "Ignorant n00b" please let me know. I'll try to get over to a friend's house to check this out on their connection and post here the results. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions you can give.
