Just my 2 cents.
If you remember though, the only reason Sony could shut down WR was because they were using Sony's patcher. Everyone had to legitimatley OWN the software(minus the expansion packs) so they couldn't do anything about that. I see no reason why we have to use software we legally own on Sony's servers, I own Unreal Tournament for PC, do I have to play on multiplayer servers hosted by Epic Games, NO, instead I play on servers hosted by clans and individuals. The expansion part is Sony's own fault for letting anyone with EQ installed download them through the patcher, you can't use them on a Live server without purchasing it in some form, but you can still get the software.

Nice to see the emulator bubble is intact and preserved by the usual lies.

No it isn't. Even if WR had no patcher, they would have still cent a CnD and they would have still been shut down. Its Sony v. Tiny (relatively) Organization. Theres power in numbers, regardless of who is right.

/me resists the urge to CnP the relevant slashdot posts.

Except that Sony's real grudge lies with emulation stealing customers away from EQlive, and not so much that as a minor nusance becoming a major problem later on... putting out the burning leaves before they become a raging forrest fire. This is evident in their unsubtle attempts to outpace live compatibility with EQemu.

It's a classic example of a greedy buncha suits exercising their non-existant right to profit, and protecting their interests. Were it up to sony... they would shut down Blizzard, Mythic, and NCSoft through cicuit court action (stomping out competition). Let's be glad it isn't up to them.

And affirming what ciscyouc said, it's also a matter of who's willing to pay for expensive legal fees in order to prove who's within their legal rights.

This is right about as retarded as saying that EQEmu or WR is legal.

Its more of who will listen when they get a cease and desist and when to ignore it Sony's threats are just simple cease and desists through email, if they really wanted to take the effort they would just have someone give you the letter of notice to show up in court next week :P
