there are several ways to use the emulator.

1. is to just connect to an existing server. that is done through the gotfrags loginserver. You won't be an admin and unless you know EQ, it won't make a lot of sense to you.

Easy to set this up since it's only client related things.

2. To setup your own private minilogin and server. This is of interest mostly to people that need a quiet server or don't have regular access to the Internet. It also makes a very good personal zone explorer. But unless you know about equipment and mobs and things like that, there is not much you can get right now.

To set this up is almost as complex as the Internet server setup.

3. an Internet server that is listed on the gotfrags server list. This is the most complete setup and allows multiple users where each person gets their own gotfrags account.

Both 2 & 3 are server projects and require installing Mysql. It's not incredibly hard to do, but it does require reading the installation document that comes with the software.

The Rites of Passage is the succcessful installation of mysql including being able to access it as an admin. Consider that the "eqemu admission test".

Other ways to use the server:
4. look at the code (if you are a programmer type) to learn how do to a server like this

5. contribute in the EQ information part: combat, magic, other things. But you have to be very knowledgable about how EQ works.

As Uzzon pointed out, you really need to get a copy of EQ for yourself and play the game. You need a copy anyway or you won't be able to do anything with the servers. And you need to play the game so you can better understand the experience here.
Even if it is only for three-months -- play the game.

Start slowly, learn, do more. and so on.
