Default EQW 2.2 runs slow.
Nevermind I guess you do need to still run in 16-bit mode or else the game will slowdown bad. Running desktop in 16-bit corrected my issue.

I can't even get EQW to load. It runs the login and get me to the server selection but once i select my server and try to log in, it crashes and gives me some kind of DirectX 8 error. Any ideas?

I crashed until I set my desktop to 16bit. Is yours in 32bit?
