To the EQemu team.
greetings, I am new to these boards, and although have not played yet, look foreward to doing so.
The question I have is, how does it work?
My computer skills is to the extent of Games, I dont even know how to post pictures
Im intrested to know , in laymans terms. How changing the files will enable me to play different servers.
And I take it you're computer programers, etc.?
Thanks in advance,
Kiako

You change one file to connect to different servers, thats eqhost.txt. This will Direct EQ (if you dont let it connect to the patcher via patchme or EQW.) to The login Servers of EQEmu. Then it will use this Forums Username and Password to connect to the server. then player run servers connect to the loginserver allowing anyone to run a server for people to connect to

Question 1: It works by the programmers cracking the encryption algorithm, to decipher packets and learn what they do, well i will continue the rest in easy terms... they crack the algorithm, kind of like a cable descrambler.
Question 2: When having the correct client version, you edit the eqhosts.txt file, to connect to the servers. Yes, they are free to play on, BUT you should - wait have to obtain EQ legally.
Question 3: I believe the devs are programmers for a living. I run a server, and I do program but I am still in school, so basically.. you dont need to program to run a pre-compiled server, but if you dont know much about computers, you are more than welcome to play on my server, and I am sure all the other server administrators would be more than happy to get another player

Thanks for the responses! its kind of gone over my head, .
I think I can cope a lil' more Indepth.
What do the numbers in notepad mean??
I take it this is coding, but when they go about "finding" the infomation, is it trial and error?? or with the correct knowledge do you look at those numbers and just know what needs to be done?
Further more, A "server" that has been set up by yourself, or someone... Includes Hardwear yes? If you could please tell me how a Server in your basement turns into a Server someone in England can play on. (not to the extent of doing it, more general knowledge.)
And if you could direct me to a website for basic Programing, that would be greatly appreciated
Thanks guys!

Yeah itll involve hardware, just patch to live, go to scorpious2k.2ya.com and download the patch, then you will have it auto-setup.
I am fairly young, I will admit that I did not learn about computers from anyone except for books. Playing around and reading newsgroups and helpsites is how I learned.
Programming... well I started VB, and extreamly basic C++ at 6 and a half.
Oh, the hardware it will involve, is a server... you might want a monitor and spare keyboard if your going to be controling the database from the server itself, I am actually typing on my server pc right now.. it works great.
I recommend using Windows XP PROFESSIONAL with full service packs, NOT HOME EDITION, Windows 2k is ok, windows ME and 9k is NOT ok, windows NT I do not recommend but I suppose it should work.
For the ultimate server, I recommend Windows Server 2003. I use XP Pro on my server... and a Comcast high-speed internet connection.

Never had a problem with EQEmu on Windows, whereas EQEmu on Linux had no error log last I checked.

I think the only thing you will find that is different between the windows and linux complies is that the linux compiles usually require you to make some minor changes to the makefile, and code, and the fact the perl quest system is less stable on linux, it is not unstable in anyway, but you will find that bugs tend to lag/ or crash your quests more in linux then they do under windows.
