It is the server. If they aren't on the list, then they either lost connection to the login server or they are completely down. Either way, you can't get back on until it is restarted.

In a very strange turn of events, I can't provide an update because the building the server is housed in can't be accessed because Obama is staying in a near by hotel. They aren't allowing people in the surrounding builds I guess. How crazy is that?

I'd say the secret service are being extra careful with him, being the first black nominee and all. The media might play down racism a bit on some news networks, but don't be fooled. Please be patient, I'm as anxious for PEQ to come back up as you are, I have a ton of work to merge in. At this point, we're just waiting for somebody to plug us back in and turn the server on. We own the server, not lease it so they won't do that automatically. Hopefully, they'll get to us soon!

Considering they took it down at night, I would assume it could go back up at night as well. Though, normally when there is down time it comes back up in the morning/afternoon.

We don't pay a dime, the machine is ours, and the bandwidth is free. We couldn't ask for a better deal, which is why I don't let downtime like this get me down too much.

Another update, they are having temperature control problems in the new space, so all non-essential machines are turned off until they can work that out. One issue after another it seems :(

It's not just approaching perfection - there isn't a server I've played on that even comes close. We did find a couple that did okay but there were either lag/zoning issues or we couldn't get an admin to get back with us regardless of how many petitions/forum posts we put up (you know who you are). Frankly unless something seriously detrimental happens my buddies and I won't even bother with other servers.

Theres some decent servers out there. I played couple characters to 18 or so on Order of Hassan. It's rock solid stable but lack of PoK is kind of a bummer even though what they did with nexus was pretty good. If they could just populate it with few more vendors or mess with the starting factions wouldn't be that bad. The edge is just a blast for a couple weeks but doesn't hold you, played that a bit before i found Grand Creation.

Murdersmithy has some promise but being an Old School server with hardly any working quests is going to be a problem. The community has ironed out alot of quests though It's just matter of them getting them in and working and that server could build a nice community.

But nothing is complete up to POK EQ like grand creation. Lots of people do lots of good work on it.

Whenever it gets running again is good enough for me. Every server I've invested interest in so far has wound up tanking, and for a few weak moments I was worried the same had happened. But it was foolishness, since PEQ is the real deal.

I was hoping it would have been up before I left for work, and here on my lunch it still appears down. No word from the ISP yet, though I suspect they are still having temperature control problems.

(that's megabytes, not bits!) I'm a bit upset that we were up for 35 minutes and then back down again, but for free, the bandwidth involved, and the fact that other than times like this we have 100% uptime I cannot complain at all.

Do yourself a favor, Rent Force Unleashed. Its about an 8-10 hours play through, which to me isn't worth spending $60 on, but renting it for a weekend would be well worth the money.

Hadn't played since I toasted my laptop and my external hard drive (within the same week) and lost both my install and .ISOs last semester. Was up late last night and ended up erm... Finding my old DVD copy of the game so I could reinstall it this afternoon. Get it all taken care of, pull up the server list, scroll down to PEQ... My first thought was one of utter horror, that the other server admins raided the PEQ server so they could get some attention, glad to hear it was just the secret service! Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that Jibbatwinker ran Zeb about a year and some change ago, then someone else took it over and sorta messed it up, and now it's run by yet someone else?

Back in the day, I did really dig the PoP progression quests with the back/secondary shields, and the custom epic quests. All my chars got wiped though so I haven't really been on Zeb much.

What I guess I'm getting at: is it about as fun as when Jib ran it? Or did you play then?

Currently, AC people are working on the building and are making absolutely certain the temperature will hold steady in the new place. I had wondered why they didn't do this before the upgrade/move, but I'm told the previous tenants didn't leave until Friday so there was no time. All non-essential machines are going to remain off until they are satisfied they won't melt. ;)

Like their customers, we were offered to be moved back to the old space for the time being. But, since we aren't paying, and we've already been moved once we decided just to wait it out. The other thing about it is we are situated and plugged in, all we need is to be turned on. If we are moved, and then moved back there may be even more delays and downtime later on.

Be patient guys, we'll be back soon, and with a ton of work that needs to be merged!

I had setup the mysql thing and all that crap in the setup guide, chose peq over the classic. I just got the titanium disks and will try my own server tonight. Are you guys all on a public peq server though?

Also when I downloaded the quests it was a few weeks ago. How often is that updated and how can one see when and what those updates are? or do we just open winCVS once a week and see?

I never said when it would be up. Only that it will be. Our ISP has not given me an ETA so I can't give you one.

Well on a different note, the small amount of time I have had to throw at EQ I have had some fun on the server, "The Murdersmithy" its a Classic + Kunark. Pretty fun.

Yeah it's pretty great, but it has a lot of non-classic content in it still. Nektulos has the new spawns, Cazic-Thule is still just like every other classic server lacking the original spawns (man, do I want the original data from 1.0) and every class/race seems to start out in Qeynos at the moment. It felt very strange being an ogre warrior and just briskly strolling out of the city without any paladin guards stomping a hole in my torso. I imagine [though I didn't make it this far] that Rathe Mountains even has the froglok city in it still. Either way, awesome that someone is actually trying. I've been playing on Angelox's server (Legacy of the Rathe) lately, until I hit 50 and realized I don't have a wizard to teleport to Plane of Hate for the phat lewts. Hopes and dreams crushed. So I went to Velketor's and got a full set of crystal chitin, and hoped PEQ would be up by now so I could torture some players (it's therapeutic.)

I second this motion man. PvP is so much better it takes actual skill and teamwork. you have to make sure to watch your back, make alliances. just make it a 10 level -/+ PvP and have it set racial, or guild.

No PvP please. It'll bring the same type of people from TZ/VZ that you guys are complaining about. Not saying all PvPers are like that, but every emu PvP server I've played on has had that sort of atmosphere.

I've only played on PEQ a while, but the number of people willing to help me out with tips or items because I'm new to the server is pretty awesome. You don't find that on most Emu servers (or live for that matter), PvP or PvE.

Fixing the dueling bug would be nice, but that's about it IMO.

Please do not turn your server into PvP. Many people do not like PvP, and I for one would be forced to leave if it converted. How about just enabling dueling, and/or make the arena zones PvP. The people who wanted to partake would be able to, and it wouldn't ruin the server for the rest of us. Anyway, hope to see the server back up soon. I'm going a little insane... Pushing a week now. =(

i also don't like to be on a quest but from behind i get ganked ..but for those who enjoy the pvp aspect of the game have a zone thats not used a lot that can be made as a BG(battle grounds) make 10 lvl rule and no major changes are done, throw in a few aspects that will make it more entertaining like bases or something just an idea but pvp is a great aspect of this game and to keep out dirty pkers this was would work and a new aspect would be vary exciting don't get scared of change give it shot cavedood

EQ actualy provides far greater potential to PvP than any FPS due to great diffirences bewten strategies bewteen classes.
So yeah- EQ is a great source for PvP, far better than any FPS out there

On WoW, which is generaly accepted as more childish and easy than eq, they have prabobly 100 times more PvP than eq - they don't even have such category as "blue" server - once you steped out in battleground - you a valid target to be ganked. I know a girl who is WoW PvP build shadow priest - she is prety uber but she refuses to raid cuase- "raids - and mobs in general - boring and stupid". She only raids people =)

so, some people play eq not just to quest, accept that

PS. I myself suck at PvP... unless of course I get to use the Gm powers vs my players on my server :grin:

There are usually 140-200 clients connected to PEQ during our peak hours. You'll know it starts when poknowledge gets over 35s lag for opening a simple door, and people start bitching about being disconnected. Oh how EQEMU crumbles under load. :grin:

I've been using my PEQ down time playing on TZ/VK. I've always played blue servers, and this has been a real eye opener. I already had a good idea what PvPers were like, since every blue server I've ever been on has the occasional PvP troll who randomly logs in and insults the entire server for being inferior to PvP (incidentally, blues never log into the PvP servers and engage in such stupid and childish antics).

On the ooc channels, it's nonstop gutter talk - probably pre-teens who feel a rush at getting to say every despicable thing they can think of. A good half of the players on the server have no interest in beating the game - just hunting each other. They bind camp, corpse camp, intentionally train - whatever they can do to grief others. Plus a pretty high percentage of the players are using warp programs.

Warp detection is pretty sensitive on Daxum's server. But yeah, I've seen people warp through doors. More people on PEQ actually warp around, than on VZ/TZ. What do you think the latest mass temporary ban was all about? :D No more loot and scoot rules? Awesome! (You mention it below.) 'stfu bluebie!', I kid. I come from Rallos Zek. I played from 99 until it turned to Zek, and Hate became the most powerful force on the server. I only took a 2 year break from 2004-2006, and now I'm back on live checking out Zek again. I have a level 50 enchanter on VZ/TZ that I stopped playing shortly after loot was removed. I love PVP. cavedude never said that it would turn PVP. ProjectEQ's charter is to approximate live as closely as possible, and people that play are supposed to be testing/reporting bugs. It's a community effort, but in a nutshell: Playing is just a reward for doing so [reporting bugs]. Optimism is key in any community project, moral has to stay high so interest continues. Nothing Earth-shattering like a PVP rule system or a server wipe is going to happen any time soon, yet it keeps being brought up. In the event it did go PVP (which is not happening!,) it'd be easier to manage the people as a GM (for me anyway, and I think Reno would probably enjoy watching people clobber each other to death, though the spectacle might take away from his world building time. . .) "Soandso just trained us in Vex Thal. omg do something." could not be responded with "Settle it between yourselves, kill the person and take the zone back." But I digress. . .

When I first started contributing to the project, this bothered me. It was not long before I came to the realization that, I could give a crap if you move on. Whatever server you go to, there is a 75% chance that it still uses some, or all, of the things I helped create. Your stuck with me buddy =)

Well said. TZ/VZ is a wonderful creation, and is a integral part of this community. It should be heralded for the things it has accomplished.

Actually it looks like everything but the forums and the game server are up and I'm sure that Cavedude is either taking a well deserved rest right now, or tinkering away now that things are starting to be up and running. Either way, catering to us whiners (me included mind you) is probably low on his priority list. When he is done, we will know. 8)

Alright, so here's where we are at, and it isn't good.

When the machine came back up today, we noticed our /home directory had reverted to a state it was when this machine was first built. /home is where our website is, and where we run the game server from, along with all our of personal work directories. PEQ is setup using a mirrored array, for those familiar with drive redundancy/backup solutions. At first glance, it appeared a drive in the array failed, and the mirror failed to rebuild the data properly. Further investigation shows we have a controller that isn't responding to the kernel at all. So, without physically inspecting the machine we can conclude that either:

1. We have a bad/loose drive cable.
2. We have a drive that is so dead it is preventing the controller from working properly.
3. We have a failed controller and as such the motherboard will need to be replaced.

I'm not sure which is worse, as on one hand we need to replace a drive, and have a good chance of losing very important data. On the other, we need to replace the motherboard. Though, in that case our data may be safe, unless the controller took out the drive. Either way, replacing hardware has to wait for now.

Fathernitwit is the only team member that has physical access to the box. Unfortunately, he is going away for a month very soon. He is going to try to get to the datacenter this weekend and see about assessing the situation in person. We then have a few options for getting the game server back up in the meantime:

1. A minor problem occurred (cable came loose) FNW fixes it, we are back up to 100% (Wishful thinking, probably will not happen)
2. We have a dead drive, and FNW is able to get data off. (Not likely considering FNW's very limited time)
3. FNW disconnects the drives on the problematic controller and I manually rebuild the game server and get us back up. (We can't risk rebuilding the game server now, having the "bad" controller come back up for some reason, and destroy the old good data when the mirror updates)
4. FNW isn't able to get to the DC, or it turns out to be an issue we didn't expect. In that case, we were offered to use a server for the time being. If the offer still stands, we may have to go that route.

My goal is to get the game server up this weekend, when FNW gets to the DC. Once he returns from his trip, he and I will discuss permanent solutions, assuming it is a hardware issue.

Now, I'm sure you're all wondering what data might we lose? Well, fear not the drive our databases are stored on is healthy, and current. So, your characters, forum data (posts, etc), quest status data, player points data, etc are all safe and sound. Both FNW and I have backed all of that data up to our personal machines as well. What we might lose, is the website code. The forum code, all of our tools, editors, scripts, etc. It can be reconstructed, but it will be painful :( We also might have lost the game server directory, but that is simply a matter of uploading my server directory from my test machine, and changing a few settings. Misc internal scripts, PEQBot, and other such things that made my life easier may also be on the chopping block.

It could be much, much worse of course. But, it still sucks. I'll know more this weekend, so hold tight.

Are you meaning that you had mounted a partition to /home and now that partition no longer mounts so you have an empty /home directory? That would make sense if that partition was on part of the array that failed.

It should be fairly easy to see if a drive failed right? Just check /proc/mdstat and /var/log/messages. But what do you mean it failed to rebuild the data? It sounds like you didn't replace the broken drive yet, so how would you "rebuild the data?" Did removing the broken drive from the array not work?

# mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sdb0

I think what it came down to is without pointing any fingers, the mirror at some point failed us. When the machine was turned on, the one controller wasn't working, so Linux used the mirror drive for /home which isn't current. I was only given partial information, we were more concerned with damage control than why did this happen last night. Either way, once it comes time to decide permanent solutions, I'm going to push for a hardware RAID5 (I would love RAID6, but that's a dream!)

Fingel: The quest status data (which quest are completed, the authors, etc) is safe. The PHP page, however may be lost and would need to be rewritten.

That server is a projecteq server pack server, which is set up with MySQL defaults, PEQ DB defaults, etc.

Chances are you shouldn't log into that server till the admin announces what he's doing with it, and chances are the admin should have locked it.

We had to do a full backup and ensure the raid was working properly. We did, and it is so cross your fingers, but this ordeal *should* be over. Website is back up, game server is next after I get some changes merged.
