Does anyone know if it is possible to change the strings in "eqlsstr_us.txt" (for translation) without getting "string not found" errors in game ?

As soon as I change some of the string all I get is string errors.

1) make sure to use advanced text editor - NOT a windows notepad. Get something like Notepad++ That file contains hidden formatting that gets destroyed if you edit it incorrectly.

2) do not edit/save while client/server is running - causes string errors to be saved into character blob and with no going back.

3) not sure if it will read the file in any other language other than English.
