Won't it be illegal for them to charge us money to play this game when SOE already has a copyright on the program?

I don't understand why so many people have the misconception that this project is going to become a fee based service.

Because they are idiots. They don't have the time to read a news post and actually think about what it means. But they have enough time to make posts like these.

if you guys could read you would notice it says donations, basically i think what they are saying is that they arent getting enough donations to cover their bandwith, so this is their way of limiting it, they arent going to charge us.....

What I meant by my above post is that I strongly disbelieve that the developers will make a mandatory charge, as it more than likely would open them for suit by SOE. But that's from a legal standpoint, the kind of wonderful people who would develop software like this, while encouraging support for their effort, make systems like these for the users without having Microsoft dreams of emperialistically sieging the market. But otherwise, no I haven't been on but a few days, so I'm not sure what other sources of information you others go on to be certain not to conotatively reinterpret the word "donate". I mean, in EQ, the word "donate" meant a mandatory charge for a service, but that one could pay more or less depending on who provided the service.

For those of you with lower than room temperature iq's. You can't play without the old files. Bypassing the sony patcher (eqgame patchme), will only bypass the patcher, it doesn't magicly roll back your files. If the date on your eqgame.exe isn't 12/05/02 you are SOL.

As for pay to play, thats totaly within the rights of the server administrator, thier bandwidth thier hardware, there isn't anything anyone can say about it.

About the legality of the project, this isn't really the place for such things but, in short. Reverse engineering for compatability is legal in most states and countries. The sticky part, is does that state or country consider click thru eula binding contracts, and has developer "X" agreed to it.

The next "legaly quesionable" issue, is a non issue. Copywrite, we don't claim to have created the protocol, we don't distribute content, we attribute to thier copywrite holders thier respective artworks.

Stop posting the eqfix.zip link. It is warez. Warez isn't tolerated. If there is a crackdown, you will be sorry. I have no power, so that's just a warning.
