The last tip actually worked!
I set Wine 1.7.1 as my default engine since most games I've ported to my Mac so far seemed to work better with that one. Just did the update to 1.7.3, logged in and saw my still-far-too-low-lvl Wood Elf. ^^
Thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it! Hopefully this thread helps other Mac-/Linux-users with similar problems, since EQ + Wine(skin) is a combination you don't see very often on the internet, which made research (in case of problems) pretty hard for me.
