I can confirm that if you hand a pet an item, it will calculate in the AC.

I did a little more testing, I spent the night getting my focus items for my Magician on the [HC] server. These figures are for the level 38 air pet.

Air pet with Broom of Trilon focus
AC:322 HP:1065 STR:135 DEX:105 AGI:135

Trilon focus and Phantom Plate
AC:398 HP:1065 STR:135 DEX:105 AGI:135

So that is pleasing, I imagine with the level 61+ summoned items the mage is very much formidable. Then I will probably do some parsing with different weapons.
