Default help starting up

hello. first off let me add i have read the wiki.

i cannot seem to get eq to start. i read the DO NOT PATCH WARNING. as such, i haven't patched anything. i have everquest trilogy installed via cds (classic, kunark, and velious). i have the EQHost file and the shortcut properly created as listed http://www.eqemulator.net/wiki/wikka...akka=PlayGuide . i erased all info in EQHost file and replaced it with what the wiki told me to do.

for the sake of proving compatibility i installed it on my laptop running XP Home and my computer running XP Pro x64. i had the same error on both.

the error is: when i start the game [via the shortcut naturally] it'll work up to the login screen. i enter the login info and then attempt to connect. the game crashes and i get the 'send error report to microsoft' window that nobody likes to see.

does anyone have advice? should i have patched up to a certain point? if so: how can i ensure that i'm not going to go past the point?
