Default Confused by install guides

Am currently running Ubuntu, (my windows vista is temporily unavailable) and not not an expert in linux was wanting to know if theres a easy way to install the server that is idiot proof i know how to use a terminal just cant get the commands listed in the guide to work anyone able to show me a better guide walk me though (with links to downloads) to what i need to do?. Only reason i want to be able to make custom AA's and test them out to make better suggestions to my eqemu server that i play on

I am working on a Linux server as well. From what I have learned so far I believe some of the programs GCC, G++?, MySQL, etc that are in the Ubuntu and Debian Lenny repositories are newer versions that will not easily work with the current emulator.
For ease, I suggest you do as I have done and download Debian Etch 4.0r, i386 netinstall http://4megaupload.com/download_file...86-netinst.iso, burn to disc, and install.
