Is it just me, or does it seem all the people (or most at least) getting that 1017 error are running Windows XP? I've never run it, W2K is nice a and smooth, without the Mickey Mouse look and feel. Anyhow, does XP have firewall capability? Could that be the cause of most of those errors?

XP has functions that people can't find because it's new to them. One of them is firewall. That's the root of probably 90% of the unsolved errors.

Default XP doesn't like Eqemu....

I have yet to get a machine that is running XP to login to the Emu , I have 8 machines here , only 2 that can't log in are the XP machines.
And the firewalls have been turned off, and the EQ files patched live then with patcher, they are both winXP Pro.
I have heard that the home edition does allow a few people to get in , but most XP machines get the 1017.
Only succes I've had was running the server on an XP machine , and was able to log into it locally on same machine.
