Simple port forwarding question

lynksys router

i am trying to set the port forwarding to open ports 9000 5999 etc. ok i has port range ect and then the IP to forward it to. Shoul I just use the IP of the router? The connection is a cable modem so the network card has been set to ubtain IP automatically. Therefore I Have no ip set on the network card.

My question is what IP should i forward the ports too since the ip of the network card is set to auto. the below picture has the ports forwarded to the router ip address

First a quick explination of port forwarding. Your LinkSys is a firewall as you know. To allow people to connect to various services behind your firewall, you need to open those ports up. On the LinkSys, that means telling the firewall what ports to listen on and then what Internal IP to send them to. The IP address of your cable modem is only used when you want people to connect to your server. Since you know what ports you need open (the ones listed are correct), the only other part of the puzzle is the IP address of your EQEmu "server".

To be sure that your port-forwarding always works, you need to give the computer you are using as your EQEmu server a static IP address. By looking at the info in your screenshot, you want to choose an IP in the 192.168.1.X range. In the port-forwarding setup screen you gave, you want to set the X you gave your server to the IP address field.

Luckily, that's all you need to do to open up the ports.

I will give it a try. As I remember though the adelphia connection i have doesnt like it when i specify and ip addy, actually it won't connect but I will give it a try. i was afraid you would say specify and ip.

ill edit this post with how it works but i don't think i will be able to get it to work like that

yea the cable modem wont let me assign an ip to the card only auto detect... so now what

The static IP doesn't involve the cable modem, it involves the PC that you are running your server on.

Not familiar with the linksys router so i can't tell you where to put it but i can tell you what you need to put..

Open winipcfg (or cmd then ipconfig /all) write down the
(win9x) Adpater Address
(NT/XP) Physical Address
It's a long number two digits then a seperator

Now find your dhcp settings, tell it you want to assign an ip for a computer it'll ask you for the number you wrote down.

Heyyyy this thread needs a bit more attention I have a Lynksys and MANY MANY MANY MANY others do.

Now I have roadrunner service.. and I "hear" that they dont like people running servers on their cable lines. Is there something they may be doing to cause so many 1017 errors.

Anyone want to list a step by step how to use Mini login on a Lynksys setup?

I'm learning the process as i try to hammer this out.. it's been months since i've gotten this to work.. I can't even connect to other servers without seeing 1017, but i'd really like to host and play my own.

Enter that number into IP Address on the router's page posted above.

Then use www.whatismyip.com to get your Internet IP or use www.dyndns.org to get a dynamically updated domain name for free. The Internet IP (or domain name) are what people outside your LAN need to connect to your computer. That is what will go into the first IP in boot5zones.bat, and loginserver.ini Remember your Internet IP and the entry for dyndns may change each time you connect to the internet. For dyndns there are utilities to automatically update the entry, see the site.
