Default 5.0 compared to 4.4?

Aside from an Update gearwise and zones, what does a 5.0 server improve upon on what a 4.4 server doesnt? Are there any advantages that a 4.4 server has over a 5.0?
Thanks alot.

:o

There's no major difference to the end user:

* EQNetwork.cpp implements a new algorithm for obvious reasons
* Items are field based in the database
* Character inventory is normalized in the database
* Some network packets are compressed

The rest has been just trying to catch up to EQLive, which is a constant battle. We were pretty close in DR2 to being back where 0.4.4 was, but then LDoN came out with a few curveballs. Based on that, we'll now see this:

* Item stats that can fluctuate will now be observed (LDoN augments, required lvls, charms, etc)

Once we achieve a level of stability with EQLive, then end users will start to see more features being added.

speaking of rec lvls, is it possible you can fix the dot while wearing a rec lvl item? kinda is a pain when you join a semi legit server, go to equip a rec lvl 62 item or something and it slowly starts killing you.

this seems the perfect thread to ask this question, I've been wanting to make my own server, but hesitate because I cant make a 5.0, I cant afford to get a compiler, but if I make a 4.4, I'm afraid it might not work with DR3. so I guess my question is, if I made a 4.4 server, would it work at all with DR3, or just be a major waste of time? thx

If you have the Dec. 2002 patch , then 044 is very playable.
As for compatability with 050 series , I'm sure someone will come up with a way to update the DB.

I'm a little confused by this question - are you asking if a 0.4.4 server will work with a 0.5.0-DR3 server? (That's like asking if Windows 95 will work with Windows 2003)

Are are you asking if the 0.4.4 server will work with the client used by the DR3 server? (The answer is no)

hmm, I guess what I should have asked was, if I make a 4.4 server, will it work? or does it have to be made 5.0? because as you said 5.0 DR3 is a 5.0 server (doh lol) and that fact makes me think if I made a 4.4 server, it would just have the same problem we are having now. because 5.0DR3 is the one catching up to eqlive, not 4.4, so if a 4.4 wont work I'm not making a server because of course, it would be a waste of time, and I cant make a 5.0, unnless anyone knows of a free complier I can download. (btw is there a free compiler?) lol thx

Kult, you need to read befor asking questions that are answered elswhere. Read the guide for setting up a 5.0 server and it Tells you where to get everything needed, including the free compiler.

People need to look and read befor expecting people to repete info over and over.

Kutt

1) You can make a 0.4.4 server just fine. If you EQ is patched to be current with EQLive you cannot play on it tho. You need to be patched to no later than dec 2002 to play on a 0.4.4 server.
2) If you have patched to be current with EQLive then you need 0.5.0+ server (You'll actually need to wait forDR3 to be released.)

Hope that clears up the confusion.
