I myself reinstalled Everquest like last week and patched to live, thinking i could roll-back, no problem. I was able to but i had the same problem crashing before it got to character select screen. I check the dbg.txt, nothing there. Then i check UIError.txt and it had problems with the UI skins. I tried messing around with old skins, luclin skins, and all that, but i had to fall back on using the old UI. So to solve your problem . . . Go into your eqclient.ini and make:
NEWUI=FALSE
That should do it, you will be able to play, but no new UI. Lately i have been having problems with zoneline boundaries, and it started doing that when i reinstalled, so I think SOny messed that up as well. Post what happens. Oh yah, and DR3 sounds like the win.
