RED HAT CALLING IT QUITS what do you think

With the announcment of Redhat no longer supporting or developing the desktop edtion(the free one) (ie: 8.0 9.0 ).
I was wondering what anyone here was going to do for a linux system.

1) Fedora (red hats new thing)
2) slackware
3) freebsd
4) mandrake (french)
5) Suse (german) soon to be owned by novel
6) debian
7) something else.

Redhat made some good stuff, but I didn't like to use it. Call me a flake.

I'm not the only one here who maintains ties with Slackware. I think /dev/noob does too. Trump will continue using gentoo.

Wooo, wooo wooo! Yay, Linux.

I think we cover this every month.

Debian is good, yay!
Slackware is good, yay!
Mandrake is ... Mandrake... ... yay!
The freebsd fanatics will come in (I assume there's one or two) and say "FreeBSD! Rawr!" ... Yay!
Maybe we could get an OpenBSD fanatic to come in and say "Nobody hacks us! w00t!" yay!
I tried to use Suse twice, but the instructions were in German. I didn't speak it fluently (and don't think I do yet).

They're all pretty much the same once you configure them correctly. I never liked Redhat's booting system, and find the SysV system of Slackware more comforting. I know debian has apt-get, and people fall in love with that.

As far as I'm concerned, there should be a desktop war next. No more "which flavor" stuff! Let's get a desktop flamewar started!

I use KDE, and sometimes carry my sorry butt into enlightenment! All other desktop systems are teH suq!

Oh, or we could go with a shell war! I use bash! All you ksh fools are idiots! haha!

I need a bumper sticker that proves I'm a big geek: My other desktop is tty2.

I wasnt trying for a flame war. I don't understand the buisness decision side of it but then again, it don't care =)
I use solarais and true64 at work, Linux at home, i have not checked out slackware since like version 1 LOL. (downloading it on floppys with my 300 baud modem that r0x0rz.

I was just wondering what people here used, Not which they thought was better then the others.

At work, I'm going to try using only slackware and free stuff, and see what happens. I assume it's going to get ugly. My ATM machines that I troubleshoot use Windows NT 4... No need to pollute my own work computer with that garbage, though.

I know you're not starting a flame war, but we linux cats are all zealots. I think it's more fun to be zealots about something less important. I'm actually very impressed with the desktop systems of linux. I like them a lot more than Windows, and would be pleased if a "control panel" came out, full-function in a universal manner for people with standard equipment. I would love it if my girlfriend could use a Linux system with her parents without any big hassle. Right now, her parents are a bit scared of it.

I only thought the last part. My real answer was "Yes."

Gentoo at home for me, my webservers I make money on use Redhat, and my fulltime gig is all SunOS... I liked RH, but I can understand, they're focusing on the products that are making them money... Smart business move on their part which I appreciate, I own a big chunk of their stock.

Im not a zealot for anything personally, I think you use whatever is best suited to your tastes and situation, but I'm alot more wise to the ways of the world, and alot more accepting than most people. You do what you want, I do the same, part of our strength lies in that we don't have to share the same brain.
Thats one of the reason I get annoyed listening to the word 'idiot' being thrown around. At some point idiot became synonymous with 'Not agreeing with me'

I've been trying out xfce4 and it SMOKES! Alot more steamlined than KDE (which I like BTW), and more feature rich than minimal WM's like fluxbox..

I'll check out xfce4 if I ever use the full capabilities of my current PC. I don't mind the bloat of KDE, whatever there is of it. It's relatively fast, and is very full-featured. I like Enlightenment because there's nothing there... It's just a blank background, and that's serene.

RedHat is no longer going to support their free version? That's a shame. I always thought giving away stuff for free was a great business model. :P
