I think this is pretty cool. The strategy they used is pretty clever, given they didn't have the opportunity and trial-and-error.
It really underscores one of the most difficult aspects of being a game programmer: Plan to handle every scenario that could possibly happen, because eventually it will.

good point merth, never thought of the trial and error aspect, normally on boss mobs, you can try... didnt work? try a new strat, with sleeper its a get it right or your toast, good job RZ.

It's impressive if only for the planning and communication it took to coordinate 3 guilds' worth of players.
The actual strategy they used to fight the Sleeper is a standard zergfest of 180ish, that's the only strategy there can be up to this expansion since the sleeper hits for ~7k a swing and DT's frequently. They simply had to rez faster than Kerafyrm could eat through their members while pets, a few melee, manaburn, and lifeburn dealt all the damage.
As far as trial-and-error, though, they had 2 actual shots at the mob. The first time the GMs despawned it due to a potential problematic NPC, the 2nd time was the kill. Other than that, sleeper has been awoken on many servers and even taken to 15% by an asian guild at one time using an exploit, which spawned the 4 warders, so they knew what to expect as far as planning goes.
Despite the poo-poo, I still think it's a pretty sweet feat to have accomplished. One can only imagine how much experience those players sacrificed to rezzes ~.~

So that is true, I heard the guild got banned for that. Is that true?

It was interesting ,a shame that got burnt by SOE the way they did.. Notice that they claim the sleeper has 2 BILLION hp's, but the damage logs shows the total damage output at somewhere near 3 MILLION... big difference..lol...

I heard that everyone who went on the first raid (like 200 ppl, wasn't it?) got fat aa pts and full xp reimbursement for their deaths (many). Not only that, but the sleeper was reset. Not too big of a deal.
Also, the damage logs are off because you have to be within a certain range to "see" the damage messages... you can't stay within that kind of range when you're taking 50000 dmg/sec, though.
I think that it is neat that they killed the unkillable, and am not at all surprised that it went wrong at least once...

I still dont think their estimates could be off by 1000x based on those damage parses though.. He esitmated he only caught half of it, but 1/1000 ? .. They did get reimbursed, but reading their story makes it obvious they feel they were shafted also, which I tend to agree with considering what it took for them to pull that much off, and how SOE handled it at the time...

They didn't use an exploit to kill the sleeper, and Wudan isn't an asian guild wtf? There was a bug (script error) the first time and the second time they just completely waxed it.

heydafam, another guild got it to 15% another time. It has nothing to do with Wudan or this recent killing. That happened in the distant past.

i guess it wasnt really about numbers... was more about persistance....

The fight raged for nearly 3 hours, most melee's clocking up 20ish deaths, with clerics clicking furiously in the background.

yuck, we went in with approx. 300 peeps... and we got pwned using standard dragon killing tactics... ie. casters go in first, blowing all their mana, then melee's backed up by clerics, shams and druids which usually works, we only got it down to 45% tho :/
ahhh well, makes me wish i didnt leave live
hopefully guildwars will be powerful enough to hold enough players to attempt this ourselves
anyways blah
