Default Server Requirements

Ive searched, having trouble finding what I am looking for. I want to run a server, i have an old box, duel p2 400's with 2 gigs ram on a 768up/ 3meg own cable line. Will that be machine enuf for the job, and which OS is best. I hve a copy of everything from windows 3.1 to Windows 2003 Server.

EDIT: Is a Static IP required? From what Ive gathered it is but i want to be sure.

Thank You

Jeremy

PS. PArdon my horrible spelling.

First of all, wrong section of the forum for this question. Second, if it can run EQ, generally you can run a server for it.

Why is this the wrong forum? It is server support I thought... Hmmm thought his question WAS about win32 server..Maybe I missed something.

I used to run the EMU back in the day on a dual Celery 366 with 512 megs of ram, and it ran fine. I dont remember if they ever made world.exe or zone.exe multithreaded, but either way, you are going to be somewhat limited by your processor. I would imagine that you will need to do some testing on how many clients your box can support before you start seeing a diffrence. As far as an OS goes, I run my EMU on Windows 2000 server, that seems to work just fine for me. I wouldnt put anything higher than 2000 server on your computer just becuase of your somewhat limited CPU power. When you install Server, just make sure that you limit the amout of services that you install and make the server standalone. I would also highly suggest installing Terminal Services in remote admin mode so that you can connect to your server from a diffrent PC, I like to work on my desktop with EQ up and have a terminal services window open to my server where I can make changes on the fly. Hope this helps you out.

As far as a static IP goes, I've never had a static IP, I just use one of the Dynamic DNS services (like dyndns) and use one of thier client programs to update your IP when it changes.

Tim
