Default Newb Questions

Sup,

Just wanting to ask a few questions about EQEmu real quick but first let me explain a few things.

I'm stationed right now in Afghanistan with the Army and have several friends over here that have played EQ. We have tons of laptops, a little spare time, and lots of desire to play EQ again. I've just found out recently about EQEmu and I'm trying to read up on it as much as possible. I just want to clarify a few things and ask a couple questions.

1. Is it true that I can run a server off one of the laptops and make a small LAN (6-8 computers) for all of my friends to play on?

2. Which is better to use, a hub or a router? I have an 8 port hub here I can use but if I need a router, I'll have someone from the mainland send me one.

3. If this does work and I can get a computer to be the server and friends to get connected on the LAN, does everything work as normal in the game? For example, does zoning act the same, mobs/items are dropped as normal, xp'ing, etc?

4. Will I need the most up to date patches from the EQ servers as well?

All of my friends are pretty excited about the possibility but I don't want them getting too into this because as of right now, nothing's certain about this being able to work. I just want to be sure that I can run a LAN and have them connect so that everything will be good to go. We are planning on keeping the 6 of us together all of the time, leveling and so on.

If this goes well, this is gonna make quite a few people happy.

Thanks a ton,

Az

Alright well, you use to be able to run lan server, but the most rescent patch broke mini login, the program which was used for that.

You could set up a normal server and #lock it and flag everyone gm status so they can join.

Well not everything works, when sony decides to patch they usually break some stuff. THere are always new things being developed. As for the xp and such, that is all database side. If you run your own server you can change that. There are a couple good db's out there. No there not exactly like EQlive, they are trying to get it as close to possible though. XP'ing is the same, spells work, with the exception of few, attacking works and everything like that, ac works but it is a little different form eqlive because they dont no the formula that sony uses. AA's dont work any more, dev need more people to packet collect em. A patch or 2 broke that and they havent been able to get it to work since. Most/All trade skills dont work.

If you don't feel like hosting your own server, there is a server that is better then EQlive IMO and it is called Winter's Roar, this server has many different features, like it made using a shield useful, by giving it a chance to block from the AC. It is a custom legit server which means no commands. www.wintersroar.com

Well, I must go get ready for school, good luck with whatever you choose to do

Whileinsilence - No I never played on Xegony.

Ryder911 - Thanks for the input man. We'll probably just find some other games to play during the downtime but nothing's for sure just yet. I really wanted to get back into EQ but don't know if it's going to happen just yet.

Is there going to be another minilogin fix so that LAN can be supported?

Thanks again for the info... It's much appreciated.

Yes you can play on 8 laptops but you only have one account name to use for minilogin you would all login to the same character select screen if you all pick a different character you would all be able to play.

To run the server i'm not sure i've heard of anyone useing a hub before but it should work fine probly easier to setup than a router everyone seems ot have problems with routers.

Depending on which Database you get the mobs will either be close to eq live or you wont have very many. Most of the high end planar mobs have little hp and need to be change you can do that simply by jsut making all mobs that certian level have a certian amount of hp.

You do not need the latest patch to play. Choose a prior one to play over lan go to the sourceforge link on eqemulator.net's homepage it will show you all the Versions. 5.7DR4 is the latest followed by 5.7D3 (idont think you can get source for that). There is 5.6 and 5.4 5.3 ect 5.3 and 5.7DR4 work with AA's now. Just try a couple to see which works. 5.7DR4 patch probly would not work. 5.7DR3 works as of April 18th patch before i'm not sure but you can knockout those.

Hope this helps.

Monolian, the mini login broke with the most rescent patch, and if he is doign a fresh install of eq and patches, no you cant use mini login. I don't know if they are goign to fix the mini login, I heard they weren't. If you looking for a good lan game, I would say counter-strike. That would be fun having like a 4 v 4 or a 3 v 3. Me and my friends have fun just doing a 2 v 1 with my 3 computers.

Did you read anything I said, he will have to fresh install it on most computers I bet, doubt he even has it on his computer already which will make him have to patch to live, or use the retail patch, which is probally like 4.0
