Yet another windows XP bug... Well i think....

This is really odd i have 55GB HD and its says i am using 19.3Gbs but when i right click on all my files under H: it says 17.0GB is use...

WTF? is this a bug or what thats like 2GBs missing ....

the reason i want to know what is going is becuase my log in server have a 4.2Gb HD in it running windowsXP and it had the same missing to GBs

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw your screenshots.

The property window on the left probably only counts the files and folders, while the HDD property window also counts hardware related stuff, maybe things like the "directory" of the harddisk. (What's the word for FAT (file allocation table) on NTFS?)

There's a difference between the actual file size and how much bytes a file uses on the HDD (a cluster isn't always used completely by a file, therefore using more space than needed; that's why games with 15000 data files are BAAAD).

When selecting all files Windows should tell you both values: File size and file size on HDD. One of them should match.

To me it's somewhat unlikely that you can lose 2 GB by this when there's only a total of 17/19 GB used, but if you have a lot of small files it may be possible.

It IS possible I suppose, but unlikely THAT much difference. He either has one of those files like "Playstation boot file" or hes got some truncated files that need to have scandisk run.

The example of the playstation boot file, I used because it is a fake file that in actually only 176kb or so, but shows as taking up anywhere from 5mb to 500 mb... It fools windows into thinking it is a bigger size no matter what you do to it.
