Another Noob In Need of help

Ok, i'm totally new to all of this, but I think I followed the steps correctly. I ran EQ first to get the updates, replaced the stuff in eqhost and datarate, and made the link to eqgame.exe with patchme at the end. Now when I go to run EQ, using the above link, my screen goes blank and it appears its trying to start up the game, but then after a couple seconds it just returns to my desktop, and nothing happens.
