Default Ping using localhost?

I recently installed eqemu and mysql, did all the steps correctly. Ran minilogin.exe and the others. When I connected to my own server (localhost which is offline) I get a ping of 6000, and get major packetloss.

Does it matter if I'm on a perm connection DSL w/ a router?
And is thier a way to fix this ping problem?

edit: I shut off the DSL+router and ran eq using localhost again. Still get ping problems so I know at least its not a REAL ping problem. What could be causing the delay in # commands?
