Default Dial Up Issues ...

Hey everyone, long time no see, hope all is well in the emu world...

I recently got back from Iraq and i'm now stationed in a barracks while my ship is in the ship yards here in the great state of VA... unfortunately all i can get is dial up. Which is sucky as hell when your trying to play EQ on an EQEMU server. I've read alot of the tweak guides on the internet and i'm still incapable of connecting to a server for more than 15 minutes without lagging out. So heres my question to you.

Do any of you know of any tweaks or something i can do to enable a better connectivity to servers with dial up?

Once again I appreciate any time you spend in researching this, or even if you know someone who knows someone thats still stuck in 1990... like me apparently ... it will be greatly appreciated and i might even throw a donation or two at your server. Thanks again guys.

Ok. This is something that our family did... We currently have DSL(Which is run through dial up, with the ISP's modem.) and we called the company and told them that it is not acceptable on how slow we were connected. So they boosted up the connection until we saw how good it was. We get like 200-300kb a second now which we could get more if we asked... and we are all running on 4 computers at once. I am not sure if that will work for you, but I mean, you can try...

soemtimes with dial up it helps to use the shortest possible cord to connect your computer to the wall, and new if possible. also, you may want to go into the extra line portion of your advanced settings for the modem and enter the command s10=50. Also heck your datarate.txt in your everquest folder and make sure it is set correctly(not sure what its supposed to be for a modem)
Also if you are making a slow connection(below 30kbps) it may be crappy phone lines. Another thing you could do is get a hardware modem, most computers nowadays come with software modems.

I used to use an Aopen FM56PCI/TP modem it was good for eq

lol rumors god they are great, yeah no the telephone cable being shorter does absolutly nothing..... yeha it may cut of like 0.001 second off time but thats hardly anything. Your best bet would be in the game there is a command that you can type and what you do istype #datarate and change it to either 1-10 10 being as if you have the best connection in the world and 1 being the slowest, 2 or 3 work best for dialup, 1 is for like a 14k modem which i hope you dont have. So your bets bet would be seeing if that works and if not theres nothing really you can do because it has to do with the server not you.

Actually a shorter phone cable does help, line noise causes a slower connection, the longer the cable (which is *not shielded as good as cat3) the more noise it picks up, ie 60hz from power going to a nearby lamp, like an antenna. not to menton an old phone cable may have kinks/corrosion. Also note it was one of many suggestions, including the one you restated.

sorry to hear your stuck on dial up atm,
its been so long since i had to use it i can hardly remember how crappy it was anymore
but back when i was useing it , i was connected at 46k and a friend said call the phone company and tell them you hear static on your phone, i didnt have any static that i could hear but i did like he said , called them said ther was alot of static on my phones , well they sent someone out and they put in filters or what ever and from then on i connected at 52k .... still crappy but a better lvl of crappy

if your not going to be stuck on dial-up for long, shorten your line , and call the phone company to see if they can lessen the noise on your line any , i wouldnt buy any modems or spend any cash on it

good luck

Yea, that is basically what I said... Though I havent heard of the static thing... but with my dial-up --> DSL All we did was called the ISP and told them that we have 4 comps on it and that it is unexceptable. they made it much faster, because I heard from a computer tech that they cant see your connection speed, but they will raise it up some.

Something else to think about in addition to shorter total line distance and surrounding EMI is other phones on the line. If you have multiple phones throughout the house all on the same phone line, try unplugging them from the phone jacks before you connect. Newb suggestion, but dont forget to disable call waiting.
