Character Created w/o trainer's note

Not sure if I'm posting in the right place, I find navigating this forum to be very alien. I've Googled the problem, no help, so here it is:

I created a Dwarf Paladin. This is the first time I have made a dwarf or a pally. I started WITHOUT a note to visit my trainer. I can't kill anything with my bare fists, so I can't obtain a weapon or any money unless I find a hand-out from another player. Is this a glitch, or is this how the game is supposed to start now? Any advice about how/what to kill so I can get a weapon and some cash for spells? And who might my trainer be? :S

I just made one on my private server, male dwarf pally in kaladim and I have a 'folded parchment' and am standing right next to the trainer.. This is with my own compiled server from just a few days ago, so it would be the most up to date out there.. dunno. if it's a server run by someone you may need to ask on their server forums since they may have changed something on their end / customized it?

Most classes start with a basic weapon. I just made a dwarf paladin on my personal server and it started me with a short sword and a folded parchment.
