A question on why?
1st off I would ask the would be flamers to not do it. This is a ligitimate question from how I see it I suppose.
My question is why if you pay to have an eq account would you want to play on an emu server?
and By the "you" i mean to say some one not doing it and not pointing a finger at the ones doing it.
What can some one do on an emu server they cant do on a sony server???

If you play normal EverQuest, it's simple.
EverQuest is mainly driven by items, and the acquisition of new items. EQEmu, for most people, allows them to log in and give themselves all the uber equipment they've dreamed of, and waste a few mobs with it. It's not real, but it lets you oogle over "having" the items for a bit.
For the more advanced, you can make your own spawns, quests and items by editing the database. If you know how to code you can even add a new feature to the server's programs themselves.
It gives you the freedom and the fun to take your favorite game and do the things you've always wanted to do. Or to try out a new idea, or explore.

I agree with Xarslik .... and additional, our goal is to implement a whole trading and crafting system so that non fighting player also have her fun, - not even hack and slay, even collectors should be satisfied, - give the rpg much more possibilities like uo provide us. but with eq, you could rpg much better different races.
@image - eqemu should have a scripting engine, without a scripting engine, i guess a lot of different developing lines will split off from your main developing line. A really good reference for a good scripting engine is pol (uo), the core is allways developed by the core developers, but the server specified engined and differences, are depending on the server owners and they can easily implement a lot of new and own features without the necessary need of changing the core.

MySQL is pretty much our 'scripting', Solar and Wes are refining the quests scripts. Busy fixing for EQLive at the moment

the mysql database is only a comfortable storage medium and a half-professional possibility to customize server-functionalities. But a scripting engine could provide us with zone/shard customized features. i.e. Whats about special npc ai's and the rules for crafting items? If you find a possibility to give the server-owners to handle this only with the mysql, - i am really satisfied

Testing and fun?
I would say to interact with people, having fun, meeting new people and maybe making new friends, as well for meeting old friends. But moreso, getting items that you once dreamed of, wanting, or creating as well, to explore areas that you normally could not. I will also add, that I have seen areas that I never seen, explored or otherwise, and now I know them quite well and better than before. (and feel a bit more relaxed going to places that on the main servers, official if you may, than before.)

Nice replys
I would like to thanks the people who took the time to post to my question. I suppose I can see that it could be used as a training ground to practice in or on areas you want to tackle in EQ (sony) if some one wanted to as well.
?? Are most the servers you can log into this way as described where you can chose items...can you also chose your level??
Would it be better to have your eqemu in a seperate directory, from the one you play on with the sony servers???
any other info you can toss my way would be helpful in reference to how emu servers opperate.

Did anyone forget, lots of people dont have an EQLive account around? Either thay got it banned, couldn't afford it, or just didnt feel like playing by verants rules anymore.
We payed for the game... why should we let it rot in the closet

Thats a good point Shawn, and one I never thought about. Even if you are banned from the game, shouldnt Verant be at least minorly reponsible to you as they barred you from using a product you purchased? I would think that would be a sticky legal predictament if someone wanted to fight them about it, especially considering they dont have a very strong or well thought out appeal process for bannings.

I was just tired of the BS. I didn't want to pay the rising monthly payments. My friends in game were about as real as the game world. Constantly raiding and working on impossibly hard quests just to "keep up", avoiding Verant reps like they were the Gestapo, which in fact they were; dealing with beggars and kewl doods, scammers and spawn theives, fighting with other guilds about who has the right to kill which spawn today and generally NOT having a good time anymore.
I can do whatever I want in the emu. I can revisit the good old days whenever I wish, without having to pay for the game over and over again. That is why I like the Emu. It's also a slap in Verants face and I like that alot!

to be uber
lets see i play emu because of these several reasons but
mainly to play because to do things i have never done like see a plane..(never did than in reg eq seem like every good guild i got into disbanded before that.)on reg eq i went into western wastes once and never went back
(main reason seeing a lvl 60 warrior get killed in one hit)
I plan to go there now and kick some butt.
by the it be almost impossible to get the 80 ac i heard about but now i have finaly seen it (GREAT SHADOW BP!).
my next test is to go to each of the plains and chew and rip the gods a new one. (all solo)
Try to do that with the reg eq hahaha.
