Default Upstream Bandwidth

How much Bandwidth is used per client on average? Anyone know? Trying to figure out how many people I could have playing off a server hosted off my cable modem at once without actually having all of them log in.

It ranges something like 2MBs - 5MBs per person.

LOL, I think he means 2-5K, not MB.

When I had 512k up, I could handle about 60 players before there would be serious connection issues. Now I have 1MB up and I get around 120+ before it starts getting really bad.

So, going by those numbers, I would say you want around 8kbps or so per person.

Thank you, sir. I would be able to handle a theoretical maximum of 32 persons.

Yeah, K, I'm an ass.

If you have a bunch of people in one zone, it's going to be more towards the 5kbs range, for each person in the zone. I think that's how it works.

I dont feel like looking back into the past threads dealing with this, but ...

They are both correct...

around 5MB for the first person in each zone.... then 5-10 K for each additional..

There are ways to get it to be lower numbers.... run Linux.... optimizing the DB.. optimizing the code etc..

No no no no no no no.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

I didn't need to know how much system memory is taken up by each copy of zone and each additional client.

I was just wondering how much actual bandwidth -- upload/download -- is taken up by each player, so I could determine approximately how many people my pipe could handle before lag from lack of bandwidth would start to become an issue.

At 5 MB per copy of Zone for the first player in it, I could have around 100 zones up at any one time. Since I plan on restricting to the first two expansions, I don't think I'll have much of a problem with too many different zones up at once.
