I'm assuming you're using an etherent cable and not usb to connect to the modem which means guess what? Your modem is probably acting as a router!
You can prove or deny this by checking your local machines ip address. Open a command window (start -> run -> cmd) and type ipconfig and look at the IP address. If it is a private address range, you're using a router. If it is your actual public IP (you can visit whatsmyip.org and look at the IP address at the top of the window to see if it matches) address, then you need to check your machine for any active firewalls that may be running and open the ports there.
