Yes, they could of simply used the calculation almost every other MMO and many RPGs use:

damage_reduction = armor / (armor + class_and_level_factors)
Which is amazingly simple and provides for a linear increase in effective hp with each point in armor.

Alas... good info, perhaps someone can see about fixing up AC to not suck.
